Happy almost December, Striders - I wanted to share these December
events, so you can mark your calendars...
- Sunday, December 6, 5-8 pm, Strider Supper Club - our theme will be:
celebrate Diana's recent marriage to Jeff! Diana asks that you bring
no gifts, but do bring a dish to share (along with the recipe) and a
blessing/wish/good fortune for Diana. I'll have some mulled wine in
the crockpot to share. Come and meet new Striders - or meet Diana if
you haven't already! 2922 Barton Street (Trena's house.) No need to
RSVP, just hope to see you there.
- Thursday, December 10th, 6:30 pm, Renee's 7th annual Christmas
Cookie Exchange party (for more details contact Renee@tcwn.org)
- Second Saturday hike on December 12th, 11 a.m. Middle Prong (8
miles, easy/moderate) in honor of Melissa Squirlock's 30th birthday.
Meet us at the trailhead or at Trena's at 10 a.m. to carpool. This is
an in-and-out so if you don't want to hike the whole 8 miles you can
turn around earlier.
- Sunday, December 13-Tuesday December 15, Charit Creek Lodge
backpacking in BIg South Fork. Come with Dre and I to play hooky
before the holidays by backpacking to the lodge and doing some hiking
(and maybe biking.) Let me know if you are interested - Babes and
Brutes welcome. We're hoping to get the "indoor camping" room for
$15/night/person.
- Wednesday December 16, 7 pm, Tour de Lights, 7 p.m., Krutch Park.
Experience the beautiful holiday lights of downtown, 4th & Gill and
Old North Knoxville by bicycle on the 3rd annual Tour de Lights,
sponsored by the City of Knoxville & TPO Bicycle Program. This five
mile ride is suited for all ages & skill levels. Prizes will be
awarded for the best decorated person, bicycle & helmet. Refreshments
provided by Mast General Store. Free bike safety checks begin at 6
p.m. Helmets are required as well as legal lights.
- Also, just to put a plug in for local music - local musicians
Morris, Mic & Steed will be performing on December 11th at the Square
Room; Buddy Miller (!!!) will be at Tennessee Shines on December 30th;
and Scott Miller will ring in the New Year at the Bijou Theater on
December 31.
Looking forward to a fun filled December!
Six Striders hiked up to our section of the A.T. today to maintain the trail - pick up trash and clean water bars. Theresa, Rhonda, Tabitha, Gina, Melissa and I had perfect weather and much fun volunteering their labor for the good of the hiking community. Thanks everyone!
Corinne will lead a hike to the Laurel-Snow Pocket Wilderness on Sunday November 15th. If interested contact her for more information! (crovett@aol.com)
Mark your calendars for the relaunch of Strider Supper Club - Sunday
evening, 6 pm, December 6th, at Trena's house.
Let's make it a "Winter Holiday" theme - post Thanksgiving & pre
Christmas/Hannukah/Kwanzaa time to celebrate together. Just bring a
dish to share. I'll make something hearty and celebratory in my newly
beloved crockpot.
I'll do an evite or Facebook event page when we get closer to the date.
Striders,
After long musing on offering regular Strider-Lite Hikes for those of us without the time or fitness level to devote full days and/or risk bodily harm to the cause, I’m finally getting in gear to offer the first Strider-Lite hike on Saturday November 21 at Norris State Park. We will hike the River Bluffs Trail PDF map attached.
http://www.tnbirds.org/birdfinding/NorrisArea.htm#riverbluff
I live just off of 275 N. on the way to Norris and suggest meeting at my house for anyone who wants to carpool. Let's meet at 9 AM. It’s 20 minutes to the Norris exit from my house, and looks like maybe another 10 – 15 from there to the trail head.
So far I’ve got Margaret Sallee, Susan Hawthorne, Melissa Squirlock and Harriet Bowden as interested. Please e-mail me if you’re thinking of coming, and I’ll send directions to my place. I’ll send a reminder a few days before to all, and call the weather on Friday November 20 so check your e-mail.
Looking forward to meeting new Striders and stretching my legs,
Miriam Davis (miriams@utk.edu)
What a glorious autumn week we are having! Hope that some of you are
playing hooky to get outside...
- We got rained out on Saturday for the trail maintenance, but Theresa
and I are heading up this Sunday just to clear out the waterbars. This
involves hiking about 1.5 mile (along the A.T. from Newfound Gap) with
a tool in hand, and raking out the leaves out of the drainage ditches
on the way back to the car. This helps keep the water moving off of
the trail. We'll meet at Sugarlands at 9 a.m. - would be great to have
others join in (this is one of the easier trail maintenance
experiences. I'm thinking we should be done by 1 pm at the latest
(depending on how many people we can get out to help.)
- It's looking like I'll be out of town on November 14 - so if anyone
wants to lead a hike that day just let me know. We may have an
inaugural "Strider Lite" hike in the works for November 21 - a 3 mile
hike near Norris Lake. Details coming soon...
- How about reinstating the Supper Club this winter? Perhaps a
pre-holiday (or in between holiday) Sunday night dinner to celebrate
the holiday season together...hmm....
See you on the trails!
